What is AZ-305?
The AZ-305: Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions exam is one of the two required exams for the Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification.
It validates your ability to design secure, scalable, resilient, and cost-optimized solutions in Azure.
Unlike exams like AZ-104 (Administrator) which focus on implementation and configuration, AZ-305 focuses on architectural decision-making. This means you’ll be asked “which service should you choose and why” more often than “how do you configure this setting.”

How It Differs from AZ-104
-
AZ-104 → Admin-level exam: “How do you configure?”
-
AZ-305 → Architect-level exam: “Which design is best and why?”
Think of it this way:
-
An Administrator provisions resources.
-
An Architect decides what resources should be provisioned in the first place.
Confusion Buster 🚨
-
If the question feels like step-by-step implementation, that’s AZ-104 territory.
-
If it feels like design decision-making based on requirements, that’s AZ-305.
Example Exam Scenario
A company needs to design an identity solution where:
-
Internal employees use on-prem Active Directory.
-
External partners need access to a SharePoint site.
-
Security team requires MFA for risky sign-ins.
➡️ The correct design: Hybrid identity with Azure AD Connect, partner access via Entra B2B, and Conditional Access with MFA.
Notice: You’re not configuring the MFA policy — you’re choosing it as part of the design.
Exam Tip
Expect business requirements → architecture choices type of questions.
Key words to watch: design, recommend, ensure, choose the best solution.
